(No. 392 - December 17, 2009 - 6:00 p.m. EST) The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, today issued the following statement after the U.S. jobs stimulus bill (H.R. 2847) was passed by the House of Representatives:
“Our government is reviewing the U.S. jobs stimulus bill and will be immediately engaging with the United States on this issue.
“We will work against any protectionist measure that poses a disadvantage to Canadian industry.
“Negotiations on the ‘Buy American’ provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are progressing well. We believe that a negotiated solution is the best way to resolve this issue on behalf of industry. We are working diligently toward such a solution with our U.S. counterparts.
“We continue to work closely with the U.S. administration and other decision makers to secure economic opportunities for business and create jobs on both sides of the border.”
