A project that harnesses the natural assets of Nova Scotia’s Fundy Region to build international profile for the region is now underway, thanks to the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a key economic stimulus initiative contained in the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Scott Armstrong, Member of Parliament for Cumberland- Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley, on behalf of The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, today announced a total Government of Canada investment of more than $850,000 to support the expansion of the region’s tidal energy research capacity.
“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting communities and industries in Nova Scotia hard hit by the global economic downturn,” said Mr. Armstrong. “Strategic investments in projects such as these that build on the clear advantages of an area, contribute to the economic, social and cultural strength of Atlantic Canadian communities.”
A commitment of $852,000, through CAF, will support the construction of the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) in Parrsboro. The 3500-square foot facility will house an operations and visitor centre for research into tidal energy and will feature research labs, a community room as well as several tidal energy-related educational elements such as educational tours, interpretive exhibits and models.
“Tidal energy has a vital role to play both environmentally and economically for this region,” said John Woods, Chair of the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy. “FORCE will bring international attention to Parrsboro and the leading edge work being undertaken in this sector, right here in Nova Scotia.”
The federal government’s Community Adjustment Fund is an economic stimulus initiative that is providing a $1 billion over two years to help create jobs and maintain employment in communities impacted by the global economic downturn. CAF is delivered in Atlantic Canada by ACOA.
