Each year, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Governor General of Canada collaborate to honour excellence in visual and media arts. The celebration of the 2010 Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts winners will begin with a news conference on Tuesday, March 9th.
News conference: announcement of winners - Tuesday, March 9, 2010
The Canada Council will announce the winners of the 2010 awards Tuesday, March 9 at 10 a.m. EDT at a news conference to be held at the Cinémathèque québécoise, 335 De Maisonneuve Blvd. East, Montreal. The eight winners from across the country will be announced and available for interviews afterwards.

The names of the winners, together with biographical information, downloadable images of the artists and their works as well as video interviews will be posted on the Canada Council website at 10:30 a.m. EDT on March 9.
About the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts
Valued at $25,000 each, the awards recognize distinguished career achievement in the visual and media arts by Canadian artists, as well as outstanding contributions to the visual and media arts through voluntarism, philanthropy, board governance, community outreach or professional activities. The winners are recognized for their body of work in visual and/or media arts in fine arts (painting, drawing, photography, print-making and sculpture, including installation and other
three-dimensional work), architecture, independent film and video audio or new media. These prestigious awards were created in June 1999 and presented for the first time in March 2000. The Saidye Bronfman Award, which recognizes excellence in the fine crafts, is part of the Governor General's Awards. It is funded from the proceeds of a $1.5 million endowment given to the Canada Council by The Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation in 2006.
Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean‑Daniel Lafond, will host a public Art Matters forum at the Canada Council Art Bank,
921 St. Laurent Boulevard, Ottawa on Tuesday, March 30 at 7 p.m. This discussion will bring together laureates of the 2010 GGAVMAs and members of the arts community. Participants are invited to a reception and tour of the Art Bank's collection beginning at 6 p.m.
For the past four years, Rideau Hall—on His Excellency Jean Daniel Lafond's initiative—has organized a series of forums on culture and society called Art Matters. They are wonderful opportunities to bring citizens, artists, academics and administrators together to discuss the challenges facing culture and to examine these issues in our society. More than 40 sessions have already been held across Canada and abroad.
Media Preview - Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 10 a.m.
Members of the media are invited to preview the exhibition organized by the National Gallery, 380 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, in celebration of the winners and their works. Exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada - Thursday, April 1, 2010
The official opening of the exhibition will be held on Thursday, April 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Great Hall of the National Gallery, 380 Sussex Drive, Ottawa. The public is welcome to attend this event.
Screening at the National Gallery of Canada Lecture Hall - Saturday April 17, 2010 at 2 p.m. and Thursday April 22, 2010 at 6 p.m.
There will be a unique opportunity to view award-winning films by the winners of the 2010 awards. The film titles will be announced at a later date. Admission to the Gallery's Lecture Hall is free.
