PERTH, ON. - Representatives of the Canadian Navy will be in the town of Perth to present a framed pictorial history of Perth’s namesake warship, HMCS Lanark, to mark the Centennial of the Canadian Navy. Commander M.A. (Mike) Hopper, Commanding Officer of HMCS Carleton, Ottawa’s Naval Reserve Division will present the display to the Town of Perth. The display includes a photograph of HMCS Lanark, a picture of the ship’s badge and a short history of the ship’s service.
Since the Canadian Navy was established in 1910, over 300 Canadian Navy ships have been named for communities from coast to coast to coast. HMCS Lanark was commissioned into the then Royal Canadian Navy on July 6, 1944 in Montreal, Quebec to serve in World War Two. The frigate arrived at Halifax on July 28 and subsequently carried out work ups in Bermuda. She then joined the ocean escort fleet working out of Londonderry, Northern Ireland and served until the end of the war seeing action in the North Atlantic.
