The Capital Winter Club will be able to complete upgrades to their facility with the help of funding provided by the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The announcement today was made by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.
Established and constructed in 1961, Fredericton's Capital Winter Club is a five sheet curling rink with viewing on two levels.
"Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, we have taken important steps to ensure that Canada emerges from the global economic downturn positioned for renewed growth," said Minister Ashfield. "Our investment of $18,000 through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program in the Capital Winter Club will contribute to local economic activity, while providing Fredericton area residents with a better facility in which to play, relax and build community life."
"The Capital Winter Club has a proud history within the province of New Brunswick and Canada," said club president Don Gemmell. "We would like to thank the federal government for this funding that will allow us to make necessary improvements to the club and ensure that our members and visitors can enjoy a better facility."
The project involves the replacement of the roof of the building as well as the existing carpet on the second floor of the facility. This investment in the Capital Winter Club will ensure that the community has access to an improved recreational facility where curling enthusiasts and community members can continue to gather for events for decades to come. The project will support local construction jobs and stimulate the economy.
Canada's Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC program to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across the country. RInC is delivered in Atlantic Canada by ACOA. Projects are selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness, and must be completed before March 31, 2011.
