PARRY SOUND, Ontario, February 5, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament (Parry Sound-Muskoka), today announced funding for the Sounds on the Bay performance series in Parry Sound.
Presented by the Corporation of the Town of Parry Sound through the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts, the 2010-2011 series will feature artists in several disciplines, including music, comedy, and dance. Performers from across the country will be joined by international artists for a variety of indoor and outdoor presentations, including an education program for elementary school children.
"Our Government values the importance of making the arts a fundamental part of the lives of all Canadians," said Minister Moore. "The Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts allows for precisely this, by making great performances accessible to all audiences, while providing a beautiful venue to showcase some of the fantastic talent our country has to offer."
"The Sounds on the Bay series is a vital part of cultural life in Parry Sound, and we are thrilled to support it," said Minister Clement. "The performances taking place throughout the year will present a multitude of Canadian talent, drawing both citizens and visitors, and making use of our beautiful facilities on the shores of Georgian Bay."
"On behalf of the Town of Parry Sound, I wish to thank the Government of Canada for its contribution to growing and sustaining the performing arts in our community," said Mayor Richard Adams. "The Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts showcases a variety of performers and genres, providing patrons with an enriched cultural experience."
The Government of Canada has provided $40,000 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund (formerly Arts Presentation Canada) of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
