Edmonton, Alberta
The Eastwood Community League is moving forward with renovations to its multi-use facility thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, Peter Goldring, Member of Parliament for Edmonton East, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the project that will enhance recreational infrastructure in Edmonton and provide stimulus to the local economy.
“I’m pleased that our Government is committed to supporting Edmonton families,” said MP Goldring. “This investment will allow Eastwood Community League facility to become more accessible to all residents, helping to better serve and strengthen our community for many years to come.”
Federal funding of $20,967 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. In addition, the Province of Alberta has committed $26,000 through the Community Facilities Enhancement Program.
“Eastwood has seen steady progress in the past number of years, thanks to the commitment of many residents and volunteers,” said Lindsay Blackett, Alberta’s Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. “The investment made by the Government of Alberta will build on the success that Eastwood residents have achieved and help ensure this facility is an even greater asset to the community.”
The existing facility will be rendered universally accessible through the additions of a wheelchair ramp and wider door at the rear entrance. A main floor washroom will also be constructed as part of the project. With its increased accessibility, all community members will be able to participate in recreational activities that the facility offers, contributing to a better quality of life for many area residents. The enhanced facility will also serve users of the adjacent outdoor hockey rink and park.
As part of an ongoing revitalization project of the Eastwood Community League, President Norm Aldi noted that “the renovations will enable the 57 year old facility to continue to serve the unique and diverse community for many more years to come.”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $153 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces. Western Economic Diversification Canada is delivering the program in Western Canada.
The provincial funds for this portion of the renovation are part of an overall commitment of $125,000 by the Government of Alberta. The Community Facilities Enhancement Program reinvests revenues generated from Alberta’s provincial lotteries to empower local citizens and community organizations as they respond to local needs.
