Three towns in Conception Bay North are receiving more than $225,000 in investments as part of the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
The announcement of funds through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) and the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program (RInC) was made today by Senator Fabian Manning on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.
“These strategic investments of more than $225,000 for the towns of Carbonear, Upper Island Cove and Harbour Grace support important and needed upgrades to local community recreational facilities,” said Senator Manning. “These investments add to the area's existing tourism and recreational infrastructure, supports jobs now and encourages economic activity right away.”
The Town of Carbonear will receive $100,444 under the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) to develop an exhibit that will interpret the significance of Carbonear Island in the history of the Newfoundland and Labrador. The development and design of the exhibit along with associated renovations to the Railway museum add to the region’s tourism offerings.
The Town of Upper Island Cove will receive $91,329 under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program (RInC) to upgrade its recreation centre. Renovations include upgrades to the roof and the installation of windows, exterior doors and siding.
The Town of Harbour Grace will receive $33,720 in RInC funding to construct an extension to its minor soccer complex. Construction activities will include site work, masonry block work, concrete foundation and floor construction, as well as the installation of roof trusses, doors, windows and other related materials.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC program, to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across the country, and encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building. The CAF is an economic stimulus initiative that is providing $1 billion over two years to help create jobs and sustain employment in communities impacted by the global economic downturn.
Both the RInC and CAF programs are delivered in Atlantic Canada by ACOA.
