Port Alberni, British Columbia
The Alberni Athletic Association is rebuilding a local recreational facility, thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“ Investing in the Alberni Athletic Hall reconstruction project will ensure that our community has access to the essential infrastructure we need today and in the future, ” said James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Alberni, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
With this investment, the Alberni Athletic Association will construct a new Alberni Athletic Hall, after the original building was destroyed in a 2009 fire. The new 1,532 square metre (16,500 square foot) building will feature a gymnasium, sports courts and indoor archery range, complete with new change rooms and bleachers. Once complete, the hall will allow local residents and visitors to participate once again in a variety of indoor recreational activities.
Funding of $1 million is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“ Today is an exciting day for Port Alberni, ” said Larry Spencer, Director of the Alberni Athletic Association. “ This is a great way to start 2010, and we appreciate the Government of Canada support for this community project. This is the boost we have been waiting for to build a bigger and better Alberni Athletic Hall. ”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
