With the help of more than $50,000 in federal support, the Alma residence of the late Molly Kool, one of the first women in North America to earn the rank of Sea Captain, will be relocated to Fundy National Park – a move designed to raise additional awareness of Ms. Kool’s unique achievements and highlight the extensive marine history of the area.
The announcement was made today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway; and the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism) and MP for Fundy-Royal.
“With support from our government the Albert County Heritage Trust Inc. (ACHT) will relocate the residence of Molly Kool to the National Park and in the process raise additional awareness of Ms. Kool’s significant, groundbreaking accomplishments both as an individual and as a Canadian,” said Minister Ashfield.
"Molly Kool's name is synonymous with the Village of Alma and its seafaring past. We are proud to be able to develop her childhood home as a heritage centre in Fundy National Park," Mary Majka, President of Albert County Heritage Trust Inc.
ACHT is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving historical and cultural structures and sites in the Albert County area. The organization will use the government support to relocate the former residence of Molly Kool to the entrance area of Fundy National Park. Ms. Kool’s former home will become a heritage centre, celebrating the life of the famous captain and the colourful marine history of the area.
The Government of Canada will contribute $57,000 toward the project under the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF); a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides $1 billion over two years for the CAF, which will help create jobs and maintain employment in communities affected by the economic downturn.
