Residents of Douglas Harbour and surrounding communities will soon benefit from a newly revitalized community centre, thanks to an investment of nearly $70,000 provided through the Community Adjustment Fund, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway was joined today by representatives of the Douglas Harbour community centre to announce funding for the facility.
"In operation for over 100 years, the Douglas Harbour Community Centre has been a hub of activity for Douglas Harbour and the surrounding communities," said Minister Ashfield. "The Community Adjustment Fund is revitalizing this Centre for the future as well as providing much needed economic stimulus to this community now."
"The Douglas Harbour Community Centre has been for many generations and continues to be the social hub of the Douglas Harbour and surrounding communities," said Paul Kaye, President of the Board of directors for the Douglas Harbour Community Centre Inc. "I believe that without support of ACOA this valuable asset would be lost to future generations. It is a part of our heritage and must be preserved."
The Douglas Harbour Community Centre has been in operation for over 100 years. Upgrades to the Centre include a new roof, improvements to facilities and a new foundation. The building continues to be the focal point of community activities for not only Douglas Harbour, but also, surrounding communities of Sypher's Cove, Grand Lake West, Scotchtown, Maquuapit Lake, Clark's Corner and Lakeville Corner.
The Government of Canada will contribute $69,163 toward the project under the Community Adjustment Fund. The Douglas Harbour Community Centre is providing $22,387 for the completion of the project.
Canada's Economic Action Plan is providing $1 billion over two years through the CAF program to assist communities affected by the current global economic downturn to create jobs and sustain local employment. In Atlantic Canada, CAF is delivered by ACOA.
