The Yarmouth YMCA will undertake important improvements so that it can continue to provide recreational activities to local residents for years to come, with support provided by the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program in Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, today announced an investment of $375,578 for renovations to the Yarmouth YMCA.
“Recreational facilities, like the Yarmouth YMCA, are the social and athletic heartbeat of our communities and provide a place residents can gather to learn new skills, exchange ideas, get fit, and have fun,” said Mr. Kerr. “By supporting projects like this through our Economic Action Plan, we are helping to stimulate local economic activity, create jobs and support Canadians hard hit by the global economic downturn.”
The investment will support a series of renovations to the facility. Upgrades will include refurbishing the youth change rooms, replacing existing lighting, completing electrical and mechanical improvements, replacing the roof and windows, and a variety of external repairs.
“The Yarmouth YMCA is a long-standing institution in this community and I’m pleased that the Government of Canada, through ACOA, is able to help fund these extensive renovations so that its facilities can be enjoyed for many years to come,” said YMCA Executive Director Barrie McGregor.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan provided $500 million over two years for the RInC program, to support upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities, and to encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building. RInC projects are selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness, and must be completed before March 31, 2011. The RInC program is delivered in the region by ACOA.
