Ottawa, 25 March 2010—A discussion paper on managing sustainable development is released today by the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development. The purpose of the discussion paper is to build awareness around sustainable development objectives and practices and to encourage dialogue among senior federal officials and others about putting sustainable development goals into practice.
“One of my duties is to report to Parliament on how well the federal government is doing at helping Canada move toward the goal of sustainable development. The challenge is to translate this goal into concrete action. The discussion paper, we hope, will show that sustainable development can be advanced, and is being advanced,” said Scott Vaughan, Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development.
The discussion paper responds to a recommendation by an independent Green Ribbon Panel report that the Office of the Auditor General highlight the importance of sustainable development from a management perspective, including bringing good practices to the attention of Parliament. The paper highlights a number of practices and approaches to manage and measure sustainability. It includes an analysis of case studies from Canada and internationally that demonstrate how sustainable development can and is and being put into practice.
