OTTAWA, March 17, 2010 - The public warning issued March 12, 2010 has been expanded to include additional code and distribution information.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume the Frontier brand pepper described below because these products may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The affected product, Frontier Whole Black Peppercorn L/M (Lampong / Malabar), is sold in 453 g / 16 oz packages bearing UPC 0 89836 00183 2 and lot codes 9299, 9306 and 9357. Some packages were sold with a sticker over the original label which bears French and English common names ("POIVRE NOIR ENTIER NON-IRRADIE. 453G" / "WHOLE BLACK PEPPER NON-IRRADIATED. 453G"), item number 29220, LOT "kn" and UPC 0 89836 00183 2.
Also, the affected whole black peppercorns have been sold in bulk. If you have purchased whole black peppercorns and cannot identify the original brand or code, you are advised to check with your place of purchase.
This product may have been distributed nationally.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a food borne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
The importers are voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
