Miawpukek First Nation, Newfoundland and Labrador
The Miawpukek First Nation (Conne River) will benefit from close to $180,000 in stimulus funds through the Recreational Infrastructure Fund (RInC) and the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), two key initiatives under the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to invest close to $147,000 for the construction of a new sports chalet and outdoor multipurpose rink as well as just over $32,000 to support research into the Miawpukek Band's traditional trapping economy," said Minister Ashfield. "These investments represent our Government's commitment to ensuring our communities are vibrant and healthy and to helping preserve First Nation's heritage."
The federal support will assist the community build a 2,500 square foot sports chalet and a multipurpose recreation facility. The funding made available through the RInC program will help cover costs associated with sub structure work, interior and exterior wall construction, roof, electrical, plumbing, piping, hydro connection and site development for the chalet. Site development, concrete slab and board system construction costs will be covered for the multipurpose facility.
The Miawpukek First Nation will receive $32,284 through the CAF program to support research into the Band's traditional trapping economy. The data will be used to develop and enhance tourism products and services and for conservation measures.
Canada's Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC program, to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across the country, and encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building. The CAF program is providing $1 billion over two years to help create jobs and maintain employment in communities impacted by the economic downturn. >
