Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville—Wainwright, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Government of Canada support for Growing Power Hairy Hill Limited Partnership to expand its biogas facility and strengthen economic opportunities in the region.
"Our Government's support to expand this biogas facility will create immediate employment opportunities while supporting long-term, environmentally sustainable growth," said MP Benoit.
Expansion of the existing demonstration-scale biogas plant represents the first phase in developing a larger integrated bio-refinery capable of producing products such as green power, bio-fertilizer and fuel ethanol. The project includes the construction of new biogas capacity, the commercialization of technology and installation of equipment to convert animal waste to methane, which will in turn be used to fuel two generators for producing electricity.
The biogas facility will largely power the ethanol refinery to be developed as part of the second phase of the initiative, while also benefitting the environment by providing a value-added solution for the disposal of feedlot waste.
"The Government of Canada's support has allowed us to immediately get the biogas expansion underway," said Shane Chrapko, CEO of Growing Power Hairy Hill Limited Partnership. “This investment will help expand the technology being used in this project, which was developed here in Alberta and has proven the ability to digest feedlot manure reliably and at a large scale."
A repayable federal investment of $4,143,000 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
The fund will provide $306 million over two years to support the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
