Linden Woods is moving forward with upgrades to the Linden Woods Community Centre thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, Manitoba Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation Steve Ashton; Rod Bruinooge, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification; and Sam Katz, Mayor of the City of Winnipeg, announced funding for the Linden Woods Community Centre Inc., which will create jobs for the area.
“A new gymnasium will offer indoor sports like basketball, soccer and volleyball which will help take some pressure on school gymnasiums and expand other recreation programs to help people of all ages in the community get active and stay active,” said Minister Ashton. “From elite athletes to weekend warriors, almost everyone received their first taste of sport at their local community centre. Our support for this initiative recognizes the importance of grassroots activities in enhancing the lives of Manitoba families.”
“The population of Linden Woods has grown significantly in recent years and along with it the demand for community infrastructure,” said MP Bruinooge. “This investment will strengthen our community by enhancing a recreational facility needed today and in the future.”
"As Mayor, I am proud the City of Winnipeg is taking a leading role with this significant investment to ensure that identified priority recreational facility projects like the Linden Woods Community Centre renovation and expansion are receiving attention and quick action," said Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz. "I want to thank our government partners for recognizing the importance of our community centres with their support today."
The Linden Woods Community Centre is using this funding to add a gymnasium, fitness activity rooms, storage rooms, stage, and kitchen to the existing centre.
Funding of $961,011 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Province of Manitoba is contributing $400,000 and the City of Winnipeg is contributing $1,160,000.
Today’s announcement continues the important steps the Province of Manitoba is taking to support economic growth by investing $1.6 billion this year into infrastructure to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and renew the province's recreational and community facilities, roads, schools, health facilities and water treatment facilities.
“This project has been in the planning stages since 2002, so we are very excited about having the shovels in the ground this summer,” said Julie Bubnick, Treasurer of the Linden Woods Community Centre. “It will mean a lot to the residents of Linden Woods to have a facility in the community that can accommodate sports and recreational programming instead of having to drive outside of the community for most activities as is now the case.”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
