Ref. #2-3329
Ottawa, Ontario (March 29, 2010) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians issued the following statement today:
"I am pleased to extend my congratulations to the newly elected president of the Nisga'a Lisims Government, Mr. Mitchell Stevens.
Mr. Steven's experience as village councilor and co-chair of the Nisga'a Lisims finance committee will aid him in his work with the Nisga'a Lisims Government for the benefit of the Nisga'a people, contributing first hand to the communities' prosperity over the coming years. During his term, he and his people will celebrate several incredible milestones, including the 10 year anniversary of the Nisga'a Final Agreement.
Since the Nisga'a Final Agreement came into effect on May 11, 2000, the Nisga'a Lisims Government has managed extensive economic activity in the Nass Valley in many industries including forestry, fishing, eco-tourism, pine mushroom harvesting and other service industries.
Canada shares in the pride of the Nisga'a Lisims for the progress they have made and the strong relationship we have built together. Canada remains committed to implementing the Nisga'a Final Agreement- an agreement that affects the lives of over 5500 Nisga'a people living in the area. It is a shining example of how self-government can create the foundation for a renewed government to government relationship between Canada and Aboriginal people, to the benefit of all Canadians.
I look forward to my first meeting with President Stevens and our work together to continue to make a difference for the Nisga'a people."
