Blake Richards, Member of Parliament for Wild Rose, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Government of Canada support to strengthen economic opportunities in the Town of Canmore.
“Our Government’s investment is creating immediate construction and engineering jobs while improving access to local businesses and services,” Richards said.
With federal support, the Town of Canmore is constructing a 60-metre pedestrian underpass and connecting pathways at Cougar Creek to allow safe, convenient travel between residential areas north of the Trans-Canada Highway and the town centre. The design incorporates both natural and artificial lighting, as well as stone walls to enhance the appeal for pedestrians.
Federal funding of $3 million is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. In addition, the Town of Canmore is also contributing $1.5 million towards the project.
“This underpass will support both public safety and sustainability in Canmore. It will provide residents and visitors with a safe way to cross the highway, allowing residents to move safely from one side of town to the other. The project will also encourage people to utilize active transportation, like walking and biking,” said Ron Casey, Canmore Mayor.
The fund will provide $306 million over two years to support the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
