GEORGETOWN, Prince Edward Island, April 13, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Member of Parliament (Egmont), today announced funding for the Town of Georgetown Summer Days Festival in July.
The Summer Days Festival is an outdoor music festival for all ages. Activities will include historical walking tours, artisan demonstrations, and local entertainment. These activities will encourage citizen participation in community events and provide opportunities for local artists to connect with the community.
"Our Government is proud to support the Summer Days Festival," said Minister Moore. "The festival is an excellent opportunity for local artists to showcase their talents and for communities to embrace their local heritage."
"The Summer Days Festival is a wonderful occasion for the people of Georgetown," said Minister Shea. "The festival will bring family and friends together and provide Georgetown with a diverse cultural experience. The festival is sure to generate a sense of excitement and pride in the community."
"The financial support from the Government of Canada is essential to the success of our events celebrating heritage in Georgetown, the capital of Kings County," said Faye McQuillan, Chairperson of the Special Events Committee. "This funding allows our volunteers to facilitate activities during our Summer Days Festival between July 19 and July 24, 2010. As always, we are very excited to be able to share our culture through arts, music, displays, a parade, and dance during our annual Summer Days Festival."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $14,800 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
