OTTAWA, April 24, 2010 - Canadian books--fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and children's literature--are as entertaining and diverse as Canada itself. Each year, BC Book Prizes celebrate British Columbian writers and publishers, and their efforts to recognize the year's outstanding works contribute significantly to the strength of our book publishing industry and to this country's rich literary heritage.
Our Government understands the importance of a strong and vibrant domestic book industry. By providing support to the Canada Book Fund, we are working to increase access to Canadian-authored books. As well, through the National Translation Program for Book Publishing, we are making sure that more people are able to read Canadian-authored books in the official language of their choice.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to commend everyone involved in BC Book Prizes on your efforts to recognize remarkable Canadian talent and to promote the book industry in British Columbia. As well, I want to congratulate this year's nominees and winners.
