OTTAWA, April 19, 2010 - Our Government recognizes the importance of arts and culture to our communities, our identity, and our nation. A vibrant audio-visual industry not only builds our economy, it also builds our national pride. Canadian screenwriters share our history; they weave our heritage into storylines that captivate audiences across the country and around the world.
The Writers Guild of Canada Screenwriting Awards showcase achievements in screenwriting for film, television, radio, and new media. They highlight the behind-the-scenes contribution of the seasoned professionals who write for television comedy and drama series, feature films, documentaries, animation, children's and educational programming, and radio drama, as well as digital and interactive productions.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate the winners and commend the nominees of this year's Screenwriting Awards. I would also like to thank the Writers Guild of Canada for acting as the voice of Canadian screenwriters and raising the profile of these talented writers.
