Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the 30th anniversary of the start of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope.
“Today marks exactly 30 years since Canadian hero Terry Fox of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, began a journey across Canada that would inspire millions of people around the world to join his quest to find a cure for cancer.
“On April 12, 1980 Terry began his Marathon of Hope in St. John’s to raise money for cancer research by running across Canada. His run ended prematurely 143 days and nearly 5,400 kilometres later near Thunder Bay when his cancer returned.
“Terry lost his battle with cancer and passed away on June 28, 1981, but the end of his life only marked the beginning of his exceptional legacy. Every year since then, his determination is remembered and honoured by millions of people across Canada and around the world who participate in the Terry Fox Run. To date, over $500 million has been raised for cancer research.
“Terry Fox taught us that through courage and tenacity everyday Canadians can accomplish extraordinary things. He is a true Canadian hero and his bravery is an inspiration to us all.”
