West Cove, Alberta
The Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State for Transport and Member of Parliament for Yellowhead, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Government of Canada support to help Camp Warwa strengthen economic opportunities in Lac Ste. Anne County.
“"Through the Economic Action Plan, our Government is ensuring that Camp Warwa can continue to serve our region’s young people for many years to come,"” said Minister of State Merrifield.
Federal funding is directed towards constructing three winterized cabins, which will create immediate short-term employment, enhance Camp Warwa’s ability to operate on a year-round basis and expand its services for visitors. The new cabins also provide the additional accommodations needed for the camp to proceed with other planned improvements. The project is creating immediate short-term employment and will allow the camp to maintain staffing for year-round operations. Local businesses that provide goods and services to the camp are also expected to benefit from the increased camp occupancy during the low-season.
Federal funding of $99,938 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“"Thousands of children come through our gate every year to challenge themselves, experience nature and have fun while they do it,"” said Gerrit Leewes, Camp Director. “These cabins will be part of their home away from home, and they will remember them fondly when they think back on their time with us. We are very thankful for the support of the federal government in helping us to continue making a difference.”
Located on the south shore of Lac Ste. Anne, Camp Warwa serves children and youth organizations from across Alberta, including the Uncles and Aunts at Large Society, Boys and Girls Clubs and Scouts and Girl Guides. The camp is operated by the Camp Warwa Society, a registered charitable organization.
CAF supports the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
