Chicoutimi, Quebec, May 26, 2010 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding of $302,000 in repayable funding for the startup in Chicoutimi of Viandomax Inc., a secondary food processing plant, and the acquisition of manufacturing equipment. Requiring an overall investment of $1.5 million, this project is expected to result in the creation of eight jobs in the area between now and 2012.
Viandomax Inc. will specialize in the processing and vacuum packing of meats using advanced methods and state-of-the-art technology.
"The startup of Viandomax Inc. is excellent news for the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. This project in the agri-food sector, an area considered of key importance for the region's development, will help diversify the local economic fabric. Canada Economic Development believes it is essential to lend its support to the startup of employment-generating companies," Minister of State Lebel noted.
This financial assistance has been awarded through the Community Diversification program, an initiative designed to help Quebec's regions maintain and expand their economic activity base. The program seeks, among other things, to support communities in their efforts to stimulate entrepreneurship and create viable enterprises.
"The Canadian economy is on its way to recovery. We can already see that the special measures laid out in Canada's Economic Action Plan are making a big difference. Implementation of Phase II of this plan, which calls for another $19 billion in investment, will help lay the foundations for solid, long-term economic growth and job creation," concluded the Minister of State.
