Brooklyn, Nova Scotia
The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, today extended the Government of Canada’s congratulations to the community on the official opening of the Brooklyn Civic Centre in the Municipality of West Hants.
“This is the type of project that is critical to the economic growth and long-term prosperity of Atlantic Canada and is what Canada’s Economic Action Plan is all about,” said Minister Ashfield. “It has the power to unite community members, create economic opportunity, and build community spirit.”
The Government of Canada, through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a key economic stimulus initiative contained in the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, invested $555,684 in the project in 2009.
The investment allowed for the construction of a 9,570- square-foot expansion to the Brooklyn Fire Hall to house the Civic Centre. The community facility includes a multi- purpose room, a stage, meeting rooms, storage spaces, offices, kitchen facilities, and a large indoor area featuring a walking path.
“This Civic Centre is a great addition to this area and a clear example of a community and all levels of government working together to improve the quality of life for our citizens,” said Mark Dearman, Chief Volunteer Firefighter, Brooklyn Fire Department.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan provided $1 billion over two years for the CAF program, to address the short-term economic needs of Canadian communities impacted by the global recession. This national economic stimulus initiative supports projects that create jobs and maintain employment in and around communities that have experienced significant job losses and lack alternative employment opportunities. The CAF program is delivered in the region by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
