SOREL-TRACY, Quebec, May 12, 2010 - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced funding for the 33rd Festival de la gibelotte de Sorel-Tracy.
Once again this year, the Carré Royal and the streets of downtown Sorel-Tracy will play host to numerous activities that will delight people of all ages. The Festival, which is taking place from July 9 to 17, will offer entertainment for children, shows, family activities, and encounters with artists from the region. The festivities will also include tastings of the well-known specialty from the region, the gibelotte des îles de Sorel–a culinary and cultural legacy dating back more than 100 years. Around 150 local artists will take part in the festival, along with numerous volunteers.
"For the past 33 years, the Festival de la gibelotte de Sorel-Tracy has been an opportunity for people from the Montérégie region to come together during the summer to revive their historical and cultural heritage and share their culinary heritage with festival goers," said Minister Moore. "This funding demonstrates our Government's commitment to culture, heritage, and the arts, and the importance we put on promoting them. These sectors contribute not only to the vitality of our communities, but also to the economic development of Canadian society."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $25,500 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
