Humboldt, Saskatchewan, May 26, 2010 -- On behalf of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. Bradley Trost, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Humboldt, today announced that the Government of Canada will be investing in a project at Humboldt Post Office National Historic Site of Canada. Constructed in 1911, this Romanesque Revival building is typical of the post offices that were erected by the Department of Public Works in smaller urban centres throughout Canada at the beginning of the 20th century.
“Foresight and vision, dedication and commitment are all qualities exemplified by the local community,” said MP Trost. “The passion of area residents to preserve local heritage attractions is one that serves as an example to the nation, and our Government is proud to contribute to these efforts that work towards the conservation of one of our national treasures.”
Through Parks Canada’s National Historic Sites Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada will be contributing up to $7,200 to support the production of a conservation plan to guide ongoing work on the building and ensure the preservation of the heritage value at Humboldt Post Office National Historic Site of Canada.
“The Government of Canada is committed to the protection of Canada’s heritage buildings and national historic sites,” said Minister Prentice. “Heritage and tourism are important to local economies, such as that of Humboldt, and our Cost-Sharing Program plays a valuable role in supporting national historic sites and preserving the fascinating stories they tell, thus ensuring their preservation for future generations.”
"The Humboldt Post Office building is an important historic site that serves our city as a museum, gallery and archives. This funding from Parks Canada will assist us in ensuring responsible stewardship of this significant heritage resource now and in the future," said Jennifer Hoesgen, Director of the Humboldt & District Museum & Gallery.
Parks Canada’s Cost-Sharing Program, with a budget of $20 million provided in part by Canada’s Economic Action Plan, reflects the government’s desire to support job creation by providing funding for conservation of national historic sites.
