WHISTLER, British Columbia, May 18, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, John Weston, Member of Parliament (West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country ), today announced funding for the Whistler Arts Council.
This funding will support the Whistler Arts Council's 2010-2011 Performance Series, which will include nine presentations of comedy, theatre, and music by Canadian and international artists. These activities will provide local residents with access to performances that reflect Canada's rich cultural diversity.
"The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of supporting arts and culture at the community level," said Minister Moore. "The Whistler Arts Council has a broad mandate which offers a wide variety of arts experiences to local residents and visitors."
"The Whistler Arts Council's presentations are eagerly anticipated by local residents," said Mr. Weston. "Our Government is pleased to support this Performance Series, which brings many cultural and economic benefits to the Whistler area."
"The Whistler Arts Council greatly appreciates the support we receive from Canadian Heritage for the Performance Series, one of our longest running programs," said Doti Niedermayer, Executive Director for the Whistler Arts Council. "The Government of Canada has been a strong supporter of arts, culture, and heritage in Whistler and a major contributor to the development of the sector."
Established in 1982, the Whistler Arts Council promotes participation in the arts. The Whistler Arts Council also produces the Bizarre Bazaar (a craft fair representing over 100 local artisans), the Children's Art Festival, and ARTrageous, a multimedia event encompassing visual, literary, and performing arts.
The Government of Canada has provided $9,000 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
