Middelburg, Netherlands, May 6, 2010--The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), on behalf of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister Responsible for Parks Canada, today marked the national historic significance for Canada of the Battle of the Scheldt.
"Today we dedicate a Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada monument honouring thousands of Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in the name of freedom," said Minister Prentice. "The real heroes of the Scheldt were the soldiers who overcame desperate conditions equivalent to the worst horrors of First World War trench-lines."
Minister Blackburn unveiled the commemorative plaque and a map describing the battle at the Sloedam Memorial and was joined by Mr. George R.J. van Heukelom, representative of the province of Zeeland, in the name of the Queen's Commissioner and Mr. Koos Schouwenaar, Mayor of the Municipality of Middelburg, Zeeland, Netherlands.
"The Battle of the Scheldt was a singular battle, an almost entirely Canadian operation that led to the liberation of the Netherlands and contributed to the successful outcome of the war," said Minister Blackburn. "Canadians will forever remember this battle as a triumph over great adversity, and a demonstration of bravery and perseverance."
In October 1944, the 2nd Canadian Corps of the First Canadian Army, with the support of the 1st Polish Armoured Division, was given the task of clearing German forces from both banks of the Scheldt estuary. The Canadian success in opening the Scheldt allowed the Allies to use the vital port of Antwerp, opening the way to the liberation of the Netherlands and the final defeat of Germany in May 1945. The waterlogged conditions in the fierce struggle for the Breskens Pocket, the South Beveland Peninsula and Walcheren Island constituted one of the most difficult but significant Canadian operations of the Second World War. More than seven thousand Canadians would lose their lives in the battles to open the Scheldt.
"This monument reminds current and future generations of an important moment in our history," said Mr. Koos Schouwenaar. "This was a crucial military operation, opening the way to the liberation of the Netherlands. We are extremely grateful to the Canadian soldiers who played a prominent role. The new plaques are a valuable asset to the Sloedam Memorial."
After the plaque unveiling, guests attended a reception where six veterans who were part of the Netherlands Campaign were presented with the "Zeeuwse Herinnerings Medaille 1944-1945" by Mr. George R.J. van Heukelom, provincial representative, in the name of the Queen's Commissioner.
Since its creation in 1919, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada has played a leading role in the identification and the commemoration of national historic significant places, persons and events that make up the rich tapestry of Canada's cultural heritage. Together, these places, persons and events comprise the System of National Historic Sites of Canada.

De Canadese regering herdenkt de historische Slag om de Schelde
Middelburg, 6 mei 2010--Zijn Excellentie Jean-Pierre Blackburn, de Canadese Minister van Veteranenzaken, namens Zijne Excellentie Jim Prentice, de Canadese Minister voor Milieu en verantwoordelijk voor Parks Canada, staat vandaag stil bij het nationaal historische belang dat de Slag om de Schelde voor Canada heeft.
"Vandaag dragen we een gedenkplaat van de Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC) op aan de duizenden Canadese soldaten die hun leven gaven omwille van de vrijheid," sprak Minister Prentice. "De echte helden van de Schelde waren de soldaten die deze hopeloze omstandigheden overwonnen. Deze omstandigheden deden denken aan de ergste verschrikkingen van de loopgravenstrijd tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog."
Minister Blackburn onthulde de gedenkplaat en een plattegrond met daarop een overzicht van de Slag om de Schelde bij het Sloedam monument. Hij werd vergezeld door Dhr. George R.J. van Heukelom, Gedeputeerde van de Provincie Zeeland, in naam van de Commissaris van de Koningin.en Dhr. Mr Koos Schouwenaar, Burgemeester van de Gemeente Middelburg.
"De Slag om de Schelde was een op zichzelf staand gevecht; een vrijwel volledig Canadese operatie die leidde tot de bevrijding van Nederland en bijdroeg aan de goede afloop van de oorlog," sprak Minister Blackburn. "De Canadezen zullen zich deze slag voor altijd blijven herinneren als een triomf over grote tegenspoed en een bewijs van moedigheid en doorzettingsvermogen."
In oktober 1944 kreeg het Canadese Tweede Korps van het Canadese Eerste Leger opdracht om met steun van de Poolse Eerste Pantserdivisie de beide oevers van de Scheldemonding van Duitse troepen te zuiveren. Dankzij deze Canadese overwinning konden de geallieerden de belangrijke haven van Antwerpen gebruiken om zo de weg naar de bevrijding van Nederland in te zetten en uiteindelijk Duitsland te verslaan. De extreem natte omstandigheden maakten de strijd om de Breskens Pocket, het schiereiland Zuid-Beveland en het eiland Walcheren tot één van de moeilijkste maar belangrijkste Canadese operaties van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Meer dan 7000 Canadezen kwamen om het leven tijdens de Slag om de Schelde.
"Het monument herinnert de huidige en toekomstige generaties aan een belangrijk moment in onze geschiedenis. Een belangrijke militaire operatie waarbij de bevrijding van Nederland werd ingezet" sprak Dhr. Mr Koos Schouwenaar. "Wij zijn erg dankbaar dat de Canadese militairen daar een prominente rol in hebben gespeeld. De nieuwe plaquette is dan ook een verrijking voor deze gedenkplaats."
Nadat de gedenkplaat onthuld was, was er een receptie voor de genodigden. Zes veteranen die hier vochten, kregen de Zeeuwse Herinneringsmedaille 1944-1945 opgespeld door Dhr. George R.J. van Heukelom, vertegenwoordiger van de Provincie Zeeland, in naam van de Commissaris van de Koningin van Zeeland.
Sinds zijn oprichting in 1919 speelt de Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC) een vooraanstaande rol bij het bepalen en herdenken van belangrijke plaatsen, personen en gebeurtenissen die deel uitmaken van het rijke culturele erfgoed van ons land. Deze plaatsen, personen en gebeurtenissen vormen samen het System of National Historic Sites of Canada.
