The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) will develop virtual learning objects using 3D commercial simulation tools that will make virtual hands-on training possible thanks to Government of Canada support announced today.
“Our Government is committed to scientific innovation that strengthens our economy, and this 3D simulation development lab will ensure that our researchers can thrive in this competitive economy,” said John Weston, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "Given the renown of high innovation in the Lower Mainland, it's a particular honour to be making this announcement today."
“The CUBE”, BCIT's Simulation Development Lab, will allow BCIT staff and students to design, develop and implement a range of simulator training and learning systems using 3D commercial simulation tools. The project will create interactive 3D “virtual” objects, which will be used to teach concepts in a manner that would otherwise be impractical or impossible due to size, weight or cost, as well as risk associated with potential outcomes. This project will also renovate the existing Centre for Applied Research and Innovation (CARI) building; acquire electronic and audio-visual equipment; establish design and delivery guidelines and standards; and complete an outreach strategy to engage peer organizations and industry in western Canada.
"This investment will position the CUBE for success in the long-term, and the resulting transfer of knowledge will benefit our industry partners throughout Western Canada," said Chris Golding, Vice President, Learning and Technology Services for BCIT. "This is a wonderful example of an Industry-Government-Academia Consortia developing next-generation technologies and services for application in a variety of sectors including aerospace, healthcare, and transportation."
Funding of $500,000 is provided under the Western Diversification Program (WDP).
BCIT, a Burnaby-based post-secondary institution, was established in 1964 with a focus on building success through applied education and research. With a total full and part time enrolment of approximately 48,000 students every academic year, BCIT is integral to the economic, social, and environmental prosperity of British Columbia and Western Canada.
Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations, and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and represents the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.
