KINGSTON, Ontario, May 19, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Gord Brown, Member of Parliament (Leeds-Grenville), today announced funding for the City of Kingston's Grand Theatre.
This funding will support the Grand Theatre Presents professional arts programming from April 1, 2010, through March 31, 2011. This multidisciplinary arts presenter offers music, dance, theatre, and a variety of other programming for families and children of all ages. In addition, the Grand Theatre Presents ensures that residents of Kingston have access to artistic works that reflect Canada's rich cultural diversity.
"Since its reopening in 2008, the restored Grand Theatre has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural vitality of Kingston," said Minister Moore. "It is important to support community organizations, like this theatre, that allow Canadians to experience arts and culture through live professional performances."
"The Grand Theatre is a cultural institution in Kingston, and I am pleased that our Government is able to assist it with this programming," said Mr. Brown. "It is an important part of their season."
"The support from the Government of Canada is absolutely critical to our ability to bring the outstanding quality of performers in our Grand Theatre Presents season to Kingston," said Brian McCurdy, Cultural Director for the City of Kingston. "We are very grateful for the federal government's commitment to support the internationally renowned artists that appear on the Grand stage as part of our presenting program."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $45,000 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
