OTTAWA, May 25, 2010 - The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), today announced renewed funding for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program in 2009-2010.
"The Government of Canada believes that all children should be given the chance to participate in organized sport and other physical activities," said Minister of State (Sport) Lunn. "This funding will create even more opportunities for young Canadians to get involved in sport. The Jumpstart program is making a difference in communities across Canada by helping our young people to become more active, connect with one another, and experience the power of sport."
The renewed funding, in the amount of $719,000, was welcomed by Jumpstart President Dan Thompson. "Community sport and recreational activities help kids develop self-esteem and social skills," said Mr. Thompson. "Through our chapter networks and with the continued support of the Government, Jumpstart will help over 95,000 kids across Canada 'get in the game' in 2010."
Jumpstart is a charitable program that helps kids in financial need, aged 4 to 18, participate in organized sports and recreation, such as hockey, soccer, and swimming. Since 2005, Jumpstart has helped 225,000 children in almost 300 chapters across the country get involved.
The funding is part of the Government of Canada's overall commitment to amateur sport, healthy living, youth, and financially challenged families. The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport and supports participation and excellence in sport from the playground to the podium.
