Mirabel, Quebec, May 20, 2010 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding of a $500,000 repayable financial contribution to Messier-Dowty Inc. for the implementation of three automated machining cells that will serve to polish landing gear parts.
A leader in the manufacture of landing gear systems, Messier-Dowty expects the introduction of this state-of-the-art technology to improve its productivity. This will enable the firm to maintain its competitive edge, increase its international competitiveness and meet the increasingly strict requirements of the aeronautics sector.
“Innovative enterprises like Messier-Dowty that focus on research and development, productivity improvement and expansion into foreign markets make a huge contribution to the Canadian economy. This automation project, which will necessitate an overall investment of $1.7 million and result in the creation of eight high-skilled jobs, highlights the expertise of the Mirabel plant on the international stage. This initiative promises to foster the development of the aeronautics sector and consolidate Quebec's position as a world leader in the industry,” explained the Minister of State.
Developed at the Mirabel plant by a team of experts in the field, this automated machining cell technology is the fruit of major research and development activities and constitutes a major technological advancement over current hand-polishing practices.
This government assistance will help strengthen the aerospace cluster, which plays a key role in the economic development of Quebec, and further the reputation of this sector of excellence outside the province.
Canada's Economic Action Plan provides for the allocation of $110 million over three years to the Canadian Space Agency to support the country's continued leadership in the design and construction of space robotics. This funding is intended to support new opportunities for innovative Canadian companies and create high-skilled jobs.
