OTTAWA (May 17, 2010) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the appointment of Mr. Jeff Walker as alternate member and the appointment of Mr. Keith Hickling as a member of the Sahtu Renewable Resources Board for five-year terms.
"Mr. Walker and Mr. Hickling have made many distinguished contributions to their fields over the course of their careers," said Minister Strahl. "We are proud that they will serve on the Sahtu Renewable Resources Board."
Mr. Walker is a resident of Norman Wells, Northwest Territories, and has worked extensively in the natural resources sector.
Mr. Keith Hickling is also a resident of Norman Wells, Northwest Territories, and has significant experience in the renewable resources sector. He has served on the Sahtu Renewable Resources Board since 1999 as an alternate member.
The Sahtu Renewable Resources Board was established under the Sahtu Dene and Metis Comprehensive Land Claim (1993) and the Sahtu Dene and Métis Settlement Act (1994). It is the main instrument of wildlife management in the Sahtu settlement area. The Board establishes policies and proposes regulations for the personal and commercial harvesting of wildlife. It also approves plans for the management and protection of wildlife, the designation of conservation areas and endangered species, as well as interim management guidelines and park management plans and regulations proposed by government. It establishes rules and procedures for consultation and reviews any matter affecting wildlife referred to it by government.
In order to have strong public institutions, the right individuals with the necessary expertise and skill sets are essential. Governor-in-Council appointments are based on the guiding principles of competency, professionalism and accessibility to all Canadians.
