OTTAWA, May 5, 2010 - It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of André Lamy, former Commissioner of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB).
A native of Montréal, Mr. Lamy took part in the production of important feature films, as well as television commercials and industrial films. He also played a leading role in the arts sector as Government Film Commissioner and Chairman of the NFB from 1975 to 1979. Mr. Lamy later became the head of the Canadian Film Development Commission–today known as Telefilm Canada–from 1980 to 1985, before heading to the private sector as a producer with Galafilm.
Mr. Lamy was part of the creation of the official Olympic film Games of the XXI Olympiad during his tenure as Commissioner during the Montréal Olympic Games in 1976. His dedication to the NFB and his passion for film serve as reminders of his important contribution to our country's cultural landscape.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of André Lamy.
