(Gatineau, Quebec, May 31, 2010) - To celebrate 20 years of advancing safety, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is pleased to open its doors to the public for guided tours of its Engineering Laboratory facilities on Saturday, June 5, 2010.
The TSB Engineering Laboratory plays a pivotal role in the investigation of marine, pipeline, railway, and aviation accidents. Its staff investigates whether mechanical, electrical, material, structural or other deficiencies contributed to accidents. Lab experts analyze information from data recorders ("black boxes"), electronic equipment and field investigators, such as photographs and site surveys, to piece together the sequence of events leading to an accident.

Visitors can expect to see some wreckage and components related to accident investigations, equipment used by investigators to examine materials and electronic systems and the flight recorder analysis area. Examples of an animation derived from flight data recorder information and a reconstruction of a railway accident site based on site survey data will also be shown. Visitors will also be able to speak with TSB investigators on their areas of expertise.
Visitors will gather at the side entrance of the building to see some displays. From there, they can sign up for a 30-minute guided tour of the facility. Tours start every 15 minutes on the hour with a maximum of 15 participants. Access to some areas will be restricted.
