Scouts on their way to the Yoho Scout Reserve from across the region received good news today as the Government of Canada announced funding of more than $8,000 to Scouts Canada for upgrades to the camp.
"Our Government recognizes the importance of creating needed recreational infrastructure for communities like Yoho Lake and the surrounding region," said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. "Our Government's investment throught the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Fund will help repair and upgrade this important local facility while at the same time create jobs."
The project involves upgrades and renewal of the lakefront area of the Yoho Scout Reserve in order to provide a safe and useable activity area for youth. Specifically, this project involves the reconstruction of the retaining wall at the lake; landscaping and grading of the site; replacing the picnic shelter; connecting the lakefront to the canoe storage building and installing proper decks.
ACOA is investing $8,166 from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a key economic stimulus initiative under the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan, while Scouts Canada is contributing $13,334.
"These renovations will improve the beautiful shore of Yoho Lake, enhance the program that we are able to offer to Scouting youth, and, at the same time, protect and respect the environment," said Scouts Canada Area Commissioner Peter Kent.
Canada's Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across the country. RInC is delivered in Atlantic Canada by ACOA. Projects are selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness, and must be completed before March 31, 2011.
