Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 12, 2010--On behalf of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), commemorated the founding of the Royal Canadian Legion as an event of national historic significance. The ceremony took place at the Marlborough Hotel in Winnipeg, birthplace of the Legion, in conjunction with the Royal Canadian Legion’s 43rd Dominion Convention.
“Since its founding, the Royal Canadian Legion – Canada’s largest veteran-based organization – has provided a strong and united voice championing the needs of Canadian veterans,” said Minister Blackburn. “The Legion has kept the flame of remembrance alive in honour of the sacrifices of those who served and died in the service of Canada. Today, the Legion continues to play an essential role not only in the lives of veterans, but in the lives of all Canadians. Our government is proud to recognize its important contribution to Canadian values and identity.”
During the First World War, Canada faced significant challenges, one of which was the returning of hundreds of thousands of returning servicemen. In an effort to address the needs of returning Canadian armies, several small associations of ex-servicemen banded together throughout the country to provide comradeship and help with medical and financial needs not provided by the government of the time.
“Founded on the twin pillars of loyalty and comradeship, the Legion’s primary purpose since its creation has been to the service of the veteran and continuation of the memory of those who served,” said Minister Prentice. “The founding of the Royal Canadian Legion is of special meaning and value to all Canadians.” Parks Canada manages a nation-wide network of national historic sites that commemorate persons, places and events that have shaped Canada’s history and which offer visitors the opportunity for real and inspiring discovery. The Agency works to ensure that Canada’s historic and natural heritage is presented and protected for the enjoyment, education, appreciation and inspired discovery of all Canadians, today and in the future.
