Val-d’Or, Quebec, June 28, 2010 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced the granting of a repayable contribution of $2,025,000 for the construction of a new hotel, the Val-d’Or Quality Inn and Suites.
The Community Adjustment Fund, part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan adopted by the federal government, provides for the funding of promising projects such as this. Val‑d’Or Quality Inn and Suites is a business held in equal parts by the Cree Regional Economic Enterprises Company Inc (CreeCo) and businessman Fernand Trahan.
“Construction of the new Val-d’Or Quality Inn and Suites will improve Val-d’Or’s tourism offer and accommodation capacity. In addition, the project is based on a major partnership between the Val-d’Or and Cree business communities which will result in the creation of new jobs and generate substantial socio-economic spinoff for both of them. Canada Economic Development is proud to be able to help strengthen the existing ties between business people in Val-d’Or and the northern communities,” said the Minister of State.
Sixty jobs will be created by the business and 15 jobs by sub-contractors during the construction period. The new establishment will have 82 rooms, two conference rooms, an exercise room and a dining room for breakfasts.
Tourism, along with mining, agri-food processing and the transformation of forest products, are considered promising growth sectors for Abitibi-Témiscamingue. It is therefore in these priority areas that Canada Economic Development has decided to focus its development efforts in the region.
