"Canadian Forces Day was proclaimed to honour members of the Canadian Forces and recognize their contributions in Canada and abroad. Since then, CF members have proven time and time again that such recognition is well deserved.
Whether patrolling our frontiers, performing search and rescue operations, providing assistance during natural disasters or participating in international security or humanitarian missions, Canadian Forces members perform their duties with devotion, commitment and enthusiasm.
I have seen them at work in Haiti, alleviating the suffering of thousands of people affected by the devastating earthquake in that poverty-stricken country; in Afghanistan, helping bring peace and stability to a nation that has known decades of strife; off the coast of Africa, disrupting and deterring pirate activity in the area; and at home, providing assistance to Canadians in their time of greatest need.
I had the rare opportunity to put on the uniform for a day and experience the life of a soldier in training and realized that this is not just a job, it is a calling. We ask CF members to put their lives at risk, defending our values of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law. They do this for love of country and a deep sense of commitment to the well-being of their fellow man.
The unwavering loyalty and passionate commitment of our men and women in uniform have earned our recognition and respect."
