OTTAWA –The Canadian Navy is proud to welcome Mr. Tung Chan as its newest Honorary Captain (Navy), as announced by Vice-Admiral Dean McFadden, Commander Maritime Command.
Mr. Chan is a true leader of the Chinese-Canadian community in British Columbia’s lower mainland. He is the current Chief Executive Officer of S.U.C.C.E.S.S., a non-profit, charitable, multi-service agency established in 1973 to promote the well being of all Canadians and immigrants. Previously, he held progressively senior appointments within the TD Bank organization during a 28 year financial career. Mr. Chan also served for three years on Vancouver’s city council.
Mr. Chan is extensively involved in his local community, volunteering in cultural, youth and educational organizations. He has guided these organizations to advance their agendas through his appointment at Director, Chair and Honorary President positions. In 2002, he was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal in recognition of his extensive and valuable community service.
“Clearly Mr Chan is devoted to community enhancement and is deeply committed to advancing social issues. He is a strong supporter of the Canadian Forces (CF) and the Navy in particular,” said Vice-Admiral McFadden. “His current position, together with his extensive involvement in the community makes Mr. Chan the ideal individual to be affiliated with the office of the Chief of Staff for Maritime Forces Pacific.
“I am thrilled to join the ranks as an Honorary Captain (Navy) in the Canadian Navy,” says Mr. Chan of his appointment. “I look forward to occasions to foster relations between the navy and the community.”
Honorary Naval Captains act as bridges between military and civilian communities, representing diverse areas of Canadian society from politics and business to journalism and the arts. They bring with them unique skills and connections that help to strengthen the navy’s ties to Canadian communities and to promote a better understanding of maritime defence issues.
Honorary Naval Captains are quite visible, attending significant naval, CF and public events and ceremonies in uniform across the country, building bridges between military and civilian communities. They are appointed by the Minister of National Defence after receiving recommendations from the Chief of the Defence Staff and the Commander Maritime Command. These appointments are generally for a period of three years, although extensions may be granted.
