OTTAWA – The Chief of the Defence Staff, General Walt Natynczyk, will welcome United States Admiral James Winnefeld, Commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), for his first visit to Canada as the new Commander of NORAD on June 7, 2010. Admiral Winnefeld assumed command of NORAD and USNORTHCOM on May 19, 2010.
Following their statements, both General Natynczyk and Admiral Winnefeld will take questions from the media.
Admiral Winnefeld will spend two days in Ottawa to meet with The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, senior military members of the Canadian Forces, American Embassy staff, and to visit with other government organizations.
NORAD is a key element of Canada's partnership with the United States in the defence of North America. It is a longstanding and mutually beneficial bi-national arrangement that has adapted to meet the challenges of the changing security environment.
