OTTAWA, ONTARIO, JUNE 14, 2010—The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today encouraged employers and students to take advantage of more than 300 Service Canada Centres for Youth (SCCY) across Canada that have recently opened.
Through SCCYs, the Government is helping students get the work experience they will need to fully participate in the job market. SCCYs help youth by ensuring that they have competitive job search skills, and assist employers by offering a simple, free and popular place to advertise their job postings.
“Even though our economy is recovering, many young Canadians are having a hard time finding a summer job,” said Minister Finley. “Service Canada Centres for Youth assist youth and employers. We are helping young people get that first job and get the experience they need, while helping employers advertise their job postings.”
SCCYs help bring youth and employers together. They offer a number of in-house and community outreach services specially designed to help students find a job, including detailed job postings in a variety of fields, many links to employers, and useful information on workplace health and safety, new student financial assistance measures and other government programs and services.

SCCYs are only one initiative the Government of Canada has in place to support youth. The Government is also creating new employment opportunities for young Canadians. In addition, Canada’s Economic Action Plan has introduced several initiatives to help youth, including:
- temporarily increasing funding for Canada Summer Jobs and the federal public service student employment program;
- providing support to the YMCA and the YWCA to create between 800 and 1,000 youth internships with non-profit and community organizations; and
- building on the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant by introducing the Apprenticeship Completion Grant.
The Government has also made post-secondary education more accessible than ever before.
