OTTAWA – Everyone is invited to savour the sounds of summer at Rideau Hall, during the Governor General’s Summer Concerts, in partnership with Chamberfest 2010. Visitors are welcome to come early, to bring a picnic and to enjoy these free outdoor concerts on the beautiful grounds of the governor general’s official residence.
On Saturday, July 24, at 1 p.m., Songs and Tangos from the Americas, by the Gryphon Trio and Patricia O’Callaghan, will delight audiences with their highly refined and dynamic performance. The trio’s celebrated recordings include works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Lalo and Shostakovich.
Following this concert, the Band of the Ceremonial Guard, one of Canada’s oldest and best-known military bands, will perform on Saturday, July 24, at 3 p.m. The Guards’ rich repertoire is sure to enchant young and old alike.
On Sunday, July 25, at 1 p.m., the Afiara String Quartet will take the stage. This young, all-Canadian ensemble bridges the gap between Haydn and hip-hop. The Afiara String Quartet takes its name from the Spanish word fiar, meaning “to trust,” a basic element vital to the depth and joy of its music-making.
The Governor General’s Summer Concerts will conclude on Sunday, July 25, at 3 p.m., with an energetic performance by Time for Three, a charismatic trio that transcends traditional classification with its signature blend of classical, country, western, gypsy and jazz music.
