Projects will create jobs, improve safety and stimulate the economy
Calgary, Alberta, July 13, 2010 – Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, and Luke Ouellette, Alberta’s Minister of Transportation, today announced more than $17.3 million in joint infrastructure funding toward improvements to 21.8 kilometres of Highway 9 in Alberta, just outside of Calgary.
“I am proud to announce that the Government of Canada is investing in this important project. By building strong and safe roads and highways we are easing traffic congestion, increasing safety, and improving commutes,” said MP Sorenson. “As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government is helping to create jobs and contribute to Alberta’s long-term economic growth.”
“Investing in Alberta’s provincial highway network supports thousands of jobs today, lays the foundation for future economic growth, and supports our communities,” said Minister Ouellette.
Today’s announcement represents a contribution of $5 million from the Government of Canada through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, and $12.3 million from the province of Alberta.
The federal $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, delivered by Infrastructure Canada, is a key component of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The fund provides funding to provincial, territorial and municipal construction-ready infrastructure projects. Including today’s announcement, the Government of Canada has committed over $419.3 million toward 237 projects across Alberta.
The Government of Alberta has a clear plan for a strong economic recovery. The Way Forward will bring Alberta back into a surplus position in three years by trimming government spending; using cash reserves to protect key programs; continuing to invest in public infrastructure; and ensuring that provincial industries are competitive and continue to attract investment to provide jobs and prosperity.
