(No. 220 - July 12, 2010 - 2:50 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today condemned the July 11 attack in Kampala, Uganda.
“Canada strongly condemns yesterday’s attack in Kampala, Uganda,” said Minister Cannon. “More than 70 people were killed and many more injured following the explosion of bombs at two different locations. On behalf of all Canadians, I extend our condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
“We urge the Government of Uganda to find and prosecute the perpetrators of this violent crime.
“Al Shabaab, an Islamist militant group from Somalia, has claimed responsibility for the attack. Canada listed Al Shabaab as a terrorist organization in March 2010.
“Terrorism threatens people everywhere and undermines our fundamental values. We support the Government of Uganda’s efforts to work closely with its regional partners to prevent and constrain terrorism so as to protect human rights, democratic values and the rule of law.”
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and the Consulate of Canada in Uganda are closely monitoring the aftermath of the explosions.
Consular officials are in contact with local authorities and stand ready to provide consular assistance as required. At this time there are no confirmed reports of Canadian casualties.
