DAVIDSON, Saskatchewan, July 8, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State (Western Economic Diversification) and Member of Parliament (Blackstrap), today announced funding for The Davidson Leader.
The Davidson Leader was established in 1904 and now serves the communities of Davidson, Girvin, Bladworth, Kenaston, Hanley, Dundurn, Elbow, Loreburn, Imperial, and Craik.
"The periodical industry is a vital cultural sector in Canada and contributes to our economy," said Minister Moore. "Our Government is proud to invest in local periodicals that serve many communities, such as The Davidson Leader."
"I am very pleased to see the Government of Canada supporting the growth of a Davidson-based community newspaper," said Minister of State Yelich.
"The Davidson Leader is very appreciative for the grant from the Canada Periodical Fund's Aid to Publishers component. This grant assists with our distribution costs so, each week, we can mail the newspaper to readers, most of whom live in rural areas," said Tara de Ryk, publisher. "This funding helps us focus resources on creating current, original content, reporting the community's news, telling local stories, and keeping the community informed about issues and events important to them. Thank you to Canadian Heritage for your commitment to weekly newspapers on the Prairies."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $19,089 to The Davidson Leader under the Aid to Publishers component of the Canada Periodical Fund (CPF). The Fund invests in periodicals like this one to help increase the overall health of the Canadian magazine and non-daily newspaper industries. The Aid to Publishers component works to ensure that Canadians can continue to have access to the Canadian content they want from paid or request circulation magazines and community newspapers and provides those titles with the support they need to respond to a complex marketplace. This component provides greater flexibility for publishers to invest where needed in creation, production, marketing, distribution, and Web and digital development.
The CPF, which was created following public consultations, replaces two former programs: the Publications Assistance Program and the Canada Magazine Fund.
