DELTA, British Columbia, July 21, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, John Cummins, Member of Parliament (Delta-Richmond East), today announced funding for the Delta Museum and Archives Society.
This funding will support a digitization project to improve collections management at the Delta Museum and Archives following the relocation of the archives to a new state-of-the-art facility. Project activities include upgrading and adding to collections documentation to create a shared database for both museum and archives collections; uploading the updated collections database to the Delta Museum and Archives website; and training staff in new collections management procedures.
"Our Government is proud to support the efforts of local heritage institutions, which play an important role in the development of communities across Canada," said Minister Moore. "Museums like this one play an important part in sustaining the economic future of Canadian communities, as well as facilitating access to our heritage."
"The Delta Museum and Archives enriches the lives of many visitors and local residents," said Mr. Cummins. "Our Government is pleased to support this museum and the many benefits it brings to the Delta area."
"This funding comes at a key time for our organization, and the need to update our policies, procedures, and technologies related to the management of our collections and archival databases has never been greater," said Mark Sakai, Executive Director. "This project will allow the Delta Museum and Archives to integrate our operations and enhance public access to our collections, which commemorate Delta's rich history."
The Delta Museum and Archives Society, established in 1969, is a non-profit society with a mandate to capture, research, and preserve local stories, records, and artifacts for future generations. The Delta Museum and Archives promotes community identity and facilitates access to history through education, exhibits, and reference services.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $25,000 through the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
