BRANTFORD, Ontario, July 20, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Phil McColeman, Member of Parliament (Brant), today announced funding for the Eastern Canada and the Caribbean District of Kiwanis International Annual Convention, which will be held from August 5 to 7, 2010, in Saint John, New Brunswick.
"Our Government is a leader in promoting our two official languages in Canada," said Minister Moore. "With this support, we are helping make this event a place where both English and French are present."
"Our two official languages are an undeniable asset for Canadians," said Mr. McColeman. "In addition to ensuring translation during the convention, this support will make a real contribution to facilitating dialogue and exchanges."
"We pride ourselves in supporting both English- and French-speaking Kiwanians attending our convention," said Gary Levine, Governor of Eastern Canada and the Caribbean District. "Our ability to communicate in both official languages with simultaneous translation will enable us to more fully take advantage of our convention, which is a great opportunity to learn from each other and share success stories."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $2,172 to the Eastern Canada and the Caribbean District of Kiwanis International Annual Convention through the Support for Interpretation and Translation sub-component of the Promotion of Linguistic Duality component of the Enhancement of Official Languages Program. The sub-component aims to assist organizations that encourage the participation of Canadians in both official languages at public events and to increase the number of documents available in both official languages.
